Now that it is winter, the cats seek warmth in non-sunshine related forms.
Moxie in her cat pod.
I found these small, fur lined cat pods in the Halloween clearance section. Slick has tried placing them in various spots around the house with no success, until now. This one is in the rock corner by the stupidly-undersized heat vent so the area is always slightly warm. Moxie, our smallest, but densest cat, loves it in there. Moxie is a ground fighter – when other cats go high, she goes low. This is perfect for her, it is on the ground, but raised up on the rock platform, it is in a corner and the overhang means no other cats can get above or behind her. The fur doesn’t touch her or irritate her sensitivity and she gets the most warmth in the whole room. Complete win for Moxie.

Cold cats in front of heat vent.
Again, the two cats we raised to like heat vents still like heat vents. The other cats don’t like their fur being ruffled. These two understand the joy of hot, ruffled fur.

Moxie and Slick
Slick and I have slightly differing schedules. By the time he gets up, I’m deleting emails at work. On weekends, he sleeps in. This means that while the cats have been fed and I’m in the workshop on my second coffee, he is still abed. This drive Moxie NUTS! Slick is Moxie’s favorite human, in large part because Slick puts up with her fussy bullshit. On a weekend late morning, I often get a workshop visit from Moxie, which is otherwise unusual. Her pitiful mews (pronounced “ow” – no “me” to it) lead me upstairs to open the bedroom door. This time I took a pic of her joy at being reunited with Slick. She pushed herself under the covers and began grooming his beard while he was still asleep. Between her sharp tongue and terrible breath, Slick was awake quickly. Poor guy; he could barely contain his grimace for the photo I insisted he be still for.

Moxie and Slick.
Moxie, cleaning her face while laying on Slick.

We have both (Slick and me, not Slick and Moxie) been working very hard lately. We took a break and stayed on the couch the whole evening. It was good. I can face today with a refreshed feeling. Moxie even took advantage and spent some time being sweet while Slick snuggled her.

Moxie checking out my bagel with cream cheese.
Moxie came over to inspect my bagel to see if I was worth her energy to be sweet to, for the price of sharing my breakfast. She is a complicated little cat, but this trade is a simple and obvious one, to her.

Moxie cat, with Slick.
One of the reasons Moxie prefers Slick is because he puts up with her fussy bullshit. Even if it is 90F, she demands to be snuggled and held. Then she tries to claw your intestines out incidentally when she leaves. No thanks. But, Slick does it. He snuggles that fussy, hot, shedding cat in his arms and sometimes they watch tv together.

Had to blow out the photo a little because of the sunny window backlighting so you could see Moxie.

While I understand that most other areas in our hemisphere have been enjoying spring for months, we’re still trying to maintain traction in Cheyenne.

These roses are blooming in the sunlight.

The cats like it, too.

The door was only open long enough to get the mail and when I turned back around to close it, the two smallest cats had already staked their claim and passed out happily in the warmth.
